Privacy policy
This site asks for very little. Here's everything it collects, why, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
GapShark runs this website and decides how the information you give it is used. For anything about your data, email rich@gapshark.com.
What we collect, and why
- Contact form: your name, email, business name, the problems you tick and your message. We use them to reply and, if you'd like, to plan the work.
- Gap Score: your name, email, business name and your answers. We use them to email you your report and to follow up on your results.
- Chat assistant: what you type. If you leave your email, or use the chat's Email tab, we get your message so we can reply.
- Analytics: which pages are visited and which buttons are clicked, only if you allow it (see Cookies and analytics).
We don't ask for anything else, we don't buy data about you, and we never sell or share yours for marketing. There's no mailing list: you'll only hear from us about what you asked for.
The chat assistant
The chat answers from this website's own content. To write each reply, your messages are sent to OpenAI. OpenAI doesn't use them to train its models, and we ask it not to keep them.
The chat is saved in your browser tab, so it survives a reload, and is gone when you close the tab. If you leave your email in the chat, the conversation is emailed to us so we can reply.
Please don't type anything sensitive into the chat, like passwords or payment details.
Cookies and analytics
We use Google Analytics to see which parts of the site help, and nothing else. No advertising cookies, ever.
If you're in the UK, the EEA or Switzerland, analytics stays off until you click Accept. Elsewhere it's on unless you turn it off.
Your choice is saved in your browser. Change it any time with Cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
Who else handles your data
A few trusted services help run the site. Each only gets what it needs to do its job:
- Vercel hosts the website. Like any host, it keeps short-lived server logs, including IP addresses.
- Resend sends the site's emails, such as your Gap Score report and the reply to your inquiry.
- OpenAI writes the chat assistant's replies.
- Google measures visits, if you allow analytics.
- Our email provider stores the messages the site sends us.
Some of these companies are based in the US, so your data may be handled outside the UK. When it is, it's covered by the safeguards UK data protection law requires.
To stop spam, the site also remembers your IP address for a few minutes to limit how often its forms can be sent. It's held in memory and never saved.
Why we're allowed to use it
Under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR), we rely on:
- Legitimate interests, to answer what you've asked and send you what you requested.
- Your consent, for analytics. You can withdraw it at any time with Cookie settings.
- Our contract with you, if you hire us.
How long we keep it
We keep inquiries, chats and Gap Score results only as long as they're useful for helping you. If we work together, we keep business records for as long as the law requires for tax and accounts.
Ask us to delete your data at any time and we will, unless the law says we must keep it.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- Show you the data we hold about you
- Correct it
- Delete it
- Stop using it, or use it less
- Give you a copy to take elsewhere
Email rich@gapshark.com. It's free, and we'll reply within a month, usually much sooner.
Complaints
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, tell us first and we'll put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version goes here with a new date at the top.
