Overview

The project

The Santiago Guide is our own project: an English-language guide to Santiago, Chile, written by locals for visitors and people who live there. Places to eat, stay and visit, events, day trips and the city's neighborhoods.

It's where we test what we build for clients. Every listing is managed from a simple spreadsheet and published as its own page, set up for Google and AI search, without anyone touching code.

The challenge

What stood in the way

Hundreds of pages, one small team

A directory lives or dies on its number of good pages. Writing and building each one by hand would never keep up.

Competing with established guides

Older sites already ranked for Santiago searches. A new guide had to be clearer, faster and better organized to earn a place.

Keeping listings accurate

Restaurants close, hotels change hands. Duplicate and out-of-date listings make a guide untrustworthy and confuse Google.

Easy to update without a developer

Adding a place or an event had to be as simple as filling in a row, not a coding job.

What we did

How we fixed it

  1. 01

    A spreadsheet as the editor

Listings are managed in Airtable and published to the site automatically, so adding a place takes minutes.

  2. 02

A page for every place and area

Each listing, category and neighborhood gets its own page, with a title and description written for real searches.

  3. 03

    Rich results in Google

Restaurant, hotel and local business data on every listing, plus breadcrumbs, lists and FAQs, so Google can show more than a blue link.

  4. 04

    Written to answer the question

Each page opens by answering what the searcher actually asked, which is what AI answers and Google's "People also ask" pick up.

  5. 05

    Regular health checks

We crawl the site to catch duplicate listings, short titles and repeated text, then redirect or fix them.

  6. 06

Built for visitors on the move

Search, an area map, favorites and a fast mobile layout for people planning on their phones.
